One of the most wonderful and mysterious things about making music is this thing I call phantom sounds… I don’t know if this is an actual term for it… but, when you’re listening to your mix with headphones on for hours and hours, you start to hear things that aren’t there. The sounds you’ve put together almost make new instruments, and new parts, imaginary sounds which are just barely audible so far away in the mix… and if you listen closely, you can actually pick these parts out and then create them for real. If I look at it romantically, I like to think this is the quiet voice of the muse whispering about what should be in the song. But realistically, it’s obviously some kind of aural illusion caused by all the reverb and the echoes which have been recorded. You don’t have to be making music to know what phantom sounds are! When I was growing up, before I ever made music of my own, I would hear distant parts in songs that didn’t actually exist. It would freak me out, I’d be asking people if they heard what I heard but they never did…
Apathy by Mikal Cronin
One of my favourite songs right now.
I have such a difficult time recording live videos! I really need to get a proper camera, but I’m still stuck making webcam videos from my laptop or using my crappy little mobile phone - not very good quality…
This is myself and Wolf playing Rose Hip November by Vashti Bunyan.
A Parting Gesture by The Bluetones
You’ve walked between the raindrops for far too long. You’re gonna get what’s yours.
This is a wonderful documentary. I never knew before how funny Phil Spector is - he has an amazingly dry sense of humour.
